Fighting animal abuse: 154 criminal cases registered in January-July 2018

Over the first six months of the year, the Ukrainian police registered 154 cases under the fact of animal abuse. The majority of those were opened in Kyiv and Sumy region, northern Ukraine; Prosecutor General's Office reported that in the official request filed by UNN news agency.
According to the authority, in June and July, 15 cases were initiated in Kyiv alone; two of those are now closed. Another two of ten cases are closed in Sumy region; the rest are being investigated. In general, 57 cases were closed all over Ukraine during the said period.
Not a single documented case of animal abuse was reported in Khmelnytsky region, central Ukraine; one case was opened in each of the five following regions - Zhytomyr, Luhansk, Chernihiv, Ternopil and Chernivtsi.

In August 2017, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed the law about toughening criminal responsibility for cruel attitude against animals. The respective record appeared on the website of the presidential administration.
The bill submits certain changes to the Criminal Code of Ukraine. According to the document, from now on, any act of animal abuse committed due to hooligan intentions and/or by cruel methods results in six-months-long imprisonment. Any violent act against an animal will be punished by a prison term from three to five years. A perpetrator who committed any violent act, which led to physical or mental trauma or resulted in the death of an animal, may face from five to eight years in prison.
