The government of Ukraine is ready to help Greece, as the local search and rescue crews oppose the forest fires. Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman posted this on Twitter.
'My sincere condolences to the Greek people due to the tragic consequences of forest fires. The Ukrainian government is ready to render the necessary aid to Greece. I already sent the respective letter to PM Alexis Tsipras', Groysman wrote.
The fire broke out not far from Athens. It killed at least 60 people and destroyed about a thousand residential buldings; many people fled the endangered areas.
'Evangelos Bournous, mayor of the town of Rafina, said at least 60 people had perished, with the seaside village of Mati at the centre of the disaster', Express wrote, referring to the tragedy. 'Regional Greek authorities declared a state of emergency in the eastern and western parts of greater Athens as fires fanned by winds raged through pine forests and seaside towns. Buses, water trucks and machinery are being provided to help battle the fires'.
