Internet blocked in capital of Iraq

Reuters
Baghdad blocked access to the Internet because of the riots in the Iraqi capital, Anadolu reports.

It is added that the relevant decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the Iraqi National Security Council chaired by Prime Minister Haidar al-Ibadi.

Mass riots in Iraq began first in the southern regions of the country, and then moved to Baghdad.

In particular, anti-government protests took place in the Ash-Shule area in the west of Baghdad, where mostly Shiite Muslims live. Protesters demanded the resignation of the government.

After the security forces arrived, some of the protesters started burning automobile tires.

Security measures were strengthened in Baghdad.

The police blocked the entrance to the "green zone" of the capital, where government buildings are located.

In the southern regions of Iraq, protests are also continuing due to interruptions in energy supply and provision of utilities.

We recall, earlier in the Iraqi city of Kirkuk, an explosion occurred: one person was killed, at least 20 others were injured.
