Attack on Roma camp in Kyiv's Holosiivky park

Highway E-95

Another attack on Roma camp occurred in Holosiivsky park in Kyiv. The incident took place on Thursday evening, the police said.
'According to the press service, a group of people who lived in a temporary settlement abandoned it; then, a group of men who carried axes and sledgehammers arrived at the scene. They destroyed the buildings, preventing the local park staff from clearing the area, and recorded videos while tearing down the constructions', the message said.
It appeared that the attackers were the members of the National Squads, the local far-right activists.
The police opened the criminal investigation into the incident, defining it as hooliganism.
Previously, the UN insisted that the repeated cases of assault on national minorities in Ukraine need a comprehensive investigation.
The UN office in this country urged the Ukrainian government to carefully look into all such cases.
'The past month saw three arson attacks on Roma settlements in western Ukraine, Lviv and Ternopil, and in the capital, Kyiv. The attacks resulted in the forced evictions of the Roma communities. The National Police has initiated investigations under hooliganism charges (in one case with firearms). In a separate case, on 24 May, a lawyer for a Roma community was beaten and faced death threats. He represents victims of an earlier attack on a Roma settlement in 2017, when one Roma man was killed and many beaten. To date, no one has been held accountable for this killing and violence', the message said.
