Today, on June 6, Ukrainian journalists
celebrate their professional holiday. This is due to the tradition that dates back from 1992; on June 6, 1992, the country's National Union of Journalists joined the International Federation of Journalists in Brussels, as the Federation voted 'yes'.
Issues of media freedom and the role of independent journalism in the society have been extensively discussed in Ukraine.
Ukrainian reporters have been in the middle of key events in the modern history of Ukraine. Some journalists lost their lives while on duty.

Roman Sushchenko, the Ukrainian reporter, is now a political prisoner in Russia.

International Day of Solidarity of Journalists is celebrated On September 8. The day was chosen for a reason. The Nazis executed Julius Fucik, a Czechoslovak journalist and a literary critic, on September 8, 1943 in a Nazi concentration camp, where he managed to write his book Notes from the Gallows in prison. The International Peace Prize was awarded to him posthumously in 1950.
