A fire broke out in the Chornobyl exclusion zone, the State Emergency Service reports.
The flames engulfed about 10 hectares of wood; according to the governmental agency, the cause of the fire was the dry grass ignition. The fire started in the morning, at about 10.10 a.m.
The staff and vehicles of Ukraine's State Emergency Service are making efforts to extinguish the fire.
According to Mykola Chechotkin, the Head of the Service, the current radiation background in Kyiv is three times less than that estimated for the safe level. 'In Kyiv, the background currently equals 10 mcR/h (the allowable level is 30). The background in the industrial area of Chornobyl nuclear plant makes 50,7 mcR/h (the allowable level in 140)', he said at a briefing on Monday evening.
