The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament has adopted the law, which lets the country join the Metre Convention of 1975. 232 MPs supported the bill, with 226 necessary to pass.
The Metre Convention was signed in Paris in May 1975. Currently, 58 member states enjoy the membership in it, while 43 associated member states join the course of the General Conference of Weights and Measures. Ukraine has been among the associated member states since 2002.
Being the associated member state, Ukraine pays membership fees, but so far, it has quite limited rights and freedoms in this Conference. Joining the Metre Convention will let Ukraine:
- vote during the Conference sessions and join the work of consultation committees;
- participate in the key checks performed by the International Committee of Weights and Measures;
- use the services of calibration of national references, which is unavailable for the associated members;
- involve the domestic experts in the advanced training programs offered by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures;
- enjoys other benefits.
Ukraine joins the Metre Convention in the interest of implementation of EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.
