On January 13, Ukrainians celebrate Generous evening (Shchedryi Vechir) - a holiday full of kindness, as well as special traditions and customs.

According to the Christian calendar, January 13 is not only a Generous evening but also the day of the Saint Melania (Malanka).

In Ukraine, these two holidays are in fact united into one.

In the morning families begin to prepare a special dish - Generous kutya. Unlike the Lenten kutya, which is served on the Holy Eve, here you can add anything you want - milk, butter, cream, etc.

It is usually made from wheat, honey and poppy seeds. This is symbolic: grain means resurrected life, honey - sweet life and is a symbol of health, and poppy - means wealth.

The feature of the "generous" table is diversity: it is believed that the more different dishes are on it, the more generous the next year will be. All meals should be satisfying.

This evening it is undesirable to cook fish - this is considered a bad omen, because "happiness can swim out of the house."

The required attribute of the generous table are dishes from pork - this animal symbolizes prosperity in the house.

In the evening, girls start the divination.
