Paris to build barrier around Eiffel Tower

Paris to build barrier around Eiffel TowerParis plans to build a barrier around the Eiffel Tower to limit the risk of terrorism.

The mayor of Paris is analyzing a project aimed at installing a 2.5-meter-high bulletproof glass wall around the Eiffel Tower.

The city is setting aside 20 million euros ($21.3 million) for the project and will evaluate proposals with consideration for their aesthetics.

The idea is to have a “permanent and aesthetic barrier,” said Jean-Francois Martins, a city official.

“Sadly the risk of terrorism hasn’t gone away,” he said.

According to the details revealed in Le Parisien newspaper, the plan is part of a vast program valued at about 300 million euros, aimed at strengthening the security of the place, modernize the reception of visitors and increase their comfort.

The glass wall would replace the perimeter fence installed as a protection measure for the UEFA European Championship held in the summer of 2016, which has remained several months despite criticism for its unsightly image.

The projected glass barrier would encompass the gardens surrounding the tower, but access to the area would remain free, according to the details.

Around six million people visit the Eiffel Tower every year, a monument considered the most frequented in France and probably the world.
