Ukrainian National Police investigating more than 70 hate crimes - StatsLast year the National Police of Ukraine opened 76 proceedings for committing hate crimes, most of them involve the facts of violations of equal rights of citizens connected with their race, nationality, religious beliefs, as well as in connection with the desecration of religious buildings.

As the Central Investigation Department of the National Police of Ukraine reported on Wednesday, most of these criminal proceedings (50) were opened under Article 161 (Violation of equality of citizens in connection with their race, nationality, religious beliefs, disability and other grounds) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. In addition, a significant number of an array of committed crimes (12) is registered under Article 179 (Unlawful content, desecration or destruction of religious shrines).

In addition, the police carried out an investigation into 68 facts of committing unlawful acts, which were also considered as the violation of equality of citizens because of their race, nationality, etc.

"Among offences which belong to this category are hooliganism (18), causing minor bodily injuries (12), intentional destruction or damage to property (8) and robberies (4)," the report says.

Investigators outline the possible motives of this category of crime: 30 crimes involved prejudice against Christians and members of other religions. Some 11 facts could be related to sexual orientation/gender identity of the victim.

"In addition, nine crimes were committed on the basis of antisemitism, in 8 cases of which the motive for the crime committed was the racism," Central Investigation Department said.
