Polish women are staging a strike against a tightening abortion law with a march to be held at 3:30pm today in Warsaw.

Women across the country will not go to work or school on Monday, and those women who do not work will refrain from domestic chores.

Countrywide strikes come after a citizens’ initiative to tighten Poland's abortion law with the bill had been sent by MPs to the committee stage.

Poland has already some of the most restrictive abortion laws in Europe, with terminations legally permitted in case of rape or incest, the pregnancy health risk to the mother or the foetus deformality.

The Polish Bishops' Conference asked Catholics to pray for “the conscience and the light of the Holy Spirit [to shine on] all Poles who protect human life from conception to natural death”.
