YouTube may become the next social media network

YouTube may become the next social media networkYouTube has some big plans for the near future. Everyone knows YouTube as the largest online video service in the world. And let’s not forget how many channels have tons of subscribers. But, according to a report from VentureBeat, YouTube is working on a project that will transform it to something that resembles a social media platform.

As the report says the video sharing service is developing a feature called Backstage. This project will allow users to share photos, text posts, links, polls, and of course videos. Similar to Facebook and Twitter, Backstage will be placed near the Home and Videos tabs. As for the posts they will appear in reverse chronological order. They will also appear in subscribers’ feeds and notifications. All these sound very promising for the video sharing service. And besides the text and photo posts new video content will be presented for the users. In addition Backstage will enable users to share both traditional YouTube videos and videos for more private use. That could probably create an opportunity for more personal video sharing between YouTubers and their fans.

But, what is the big picture behind YouTube’s Backstage? Maybe they want to offers to users more ways to communicate to each other – photos, videos, links etc. Is Youtube trying to become the next “Facebook”? We believe that they don’t want that and they don’t expect users to leave networks like Facebook. We expect that Backstage will offer ways to share Backstage posts in other social networks. But, YouTube will try to keep you as long as possible on their page.
Backstastage might also bring some new designs to the simple and user-friendly platform. As the service becomes more active a lot of the old feature may be replaced. And that’s a good thing because you could combine the video services with the social media features.

And YouTube has to compete with Facebook, a social network with many features for every need. Besides Facebook is a social network that has proven that you can share personal updates and watch videos in one place. On the other hand Twitter is reaching to sports fans and wants to become your first choice for to watch programming the NFL games. YouTube has the video sharing world under its thumb and is looking for ways to be a more social place.

When VentureBeat tried to contact Google a spokesperson told them “we don’t comment on rumor or speculation.” Maybe they don’t feel ready to announce their big secret. But, the rumors say that Backstage is expected to launch possibly this fall, on mobile and desktop. It will begin to roll with selected popular YouTube accounts and with limited features. The rest of the world can wait a little longer.
