First police ombudsman office opened in Kyiv

First police ombudsman office opened in KyivOffice of the police ombudsman has been opened in Kyiv aiming to monitor the situation on human rights in police stations and temporary detention, UNIAN.

At the official opening of the office in 29 Instytutska st., the head of the National Police Department Khatia Dekanoidze said: "This office is needed to be to monitor the situation: what happens in police stations, detention facility,how and who work there."

"If we have a normal situation monitoring on the human rights, it will help us on the way to forming a new police - police ombudsman must fully know the situation on the ground," Dekanoidze added.

Dekanoyidze pointed out, people who work in office are empowered at any time without notice and approvals to visit the places of detention.

One of the benefits police ombudsmen is that they have not been previously involved in the system of law enforcement, and therefore are independent.

Ombudsman offices are reported to be peppered across the country.
