“Burkini” ban suspended by French court

“Burkini” ban suspended by French court The rule, imposed in the town of Villeneuve-Loubet, forbids wearing a full-body swimsuit, known as burkini, was suspended by France's highest administrative court Friday.

The court stated that ban "seriously and clearly illegally breached fundamental freedoms to come and go, freedom of beliefs and individual freedom".

Such a ruling could be a precedent for up to 30 other towns that have imposed the ban. Still the final decision on the legality of the bans would be made later.

Also people who had been fined could claim their money back, lawyers said.

The “burkini” issue troubled a lot of French cities, while opinions polls suggested most French people backed the bans, which town mayors said were protecting public order and secularism.
