Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist reacted to the words of Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu about the Scandinavian country's cooperation with NATO, calling them a lie. This is reported by The Local on Friday.

"What the Russian defense minister describes is untrue, NATO has no unlimited access either in Finnish or in Swedish territorial waters and airspace," Hultqvist said.

Earlier, Sergei Shoigu, speaking on July 24 at the board of the Russian Defense Ministry, told about the alleged involvement of Finland and Sweden in NATO structures.

"In May, a treaty was signed providing for their full participation in the exercises of the alliance and the possibility of using it by the systems of command and control of troops and weapons, for which NATO received unimpeded access to the airspace and territorial waters of these countries," Shoigu said.

Peter Hultqvist in response to his Russian counterpart said that "Sweden is free from military alliances, and makes its own decisions." The Minister of Defense added that the entry of any foreign vessel or aircraft into the territorial waters or airspace of Sweden is possible only after obtaining a special permit.
