A group of U.S. senators presented a draft document, which includes the package of new sanctions against Russia.
Reuters], pointing out that the politicians consider the current amount of sanctions insufficient.
'The current sanctions regime has failed to deter Russia from meddling in the upcoming 2018 midterm elections,' Republican Senator Lindsey Graham
stated as quoted by the news agency.
His counterpart from the Democrats Robert Menendez said that the document would be the 'next step in tightening the screws on the Kremlin and will bring to bear the full condemnation of the United States Congress so that Putin finally understands that the U.S. will not tolerate his behavior any longer'.
Earlier, Francis Fannon, the Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Energy Resources at the U.S Department of State said Washington may impose sanctions against Russian companies due to the construction of Nord Stream 2.
'Republicans and Democrats were united last month in repudiating Trump’s failure to publicly condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin for interfering in the 2016 U.S. elections. Still, Congress failed to pass anything before lawmakers left Washington for their weeks-long summer recess. The latest measure’s prospects were not immediately clear', Reuters wrote.
Before taking effect, the bill should be approved by the Senate and House of Representatives and then be signed by President Donald Trump.
