Labour MP charged after 'lying about speeding'

Labour MP Fiona Onasanya has been charged after allegedly lying about who was behind the wheel of a speeding vehicle.
The Peterborough MP, who as a party whip is responsible for keeping her colleagues in line, is charged with two counts of perverting the course of justice.
Her brother, Festus Onasanya, 33, of Cambridge, faces three counts. She appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 12 July and the pair are due to appear in court again, at the Old Bailey, on 13 August.Sky News understands Ms Onasanya's colleagues at Westminster were not aware of the case until Wednesday.Details of the alleged offences reveal they relate to speeding offences on 24 July and 23 August last year, within Ms Onasanya's first few weeks as an MP.The 34-year-old, who last year won what was a key marginal seat, has previously said she wants to be Britain's first black female prime minister.Speaking about her ambition soon after her election to parliament, Ms Onasanya told Peterborough Today: "I think that's years and years in the making."My dad used to say to me, 'If you aim for the top of the tree and miss, you come out somewhere near the top and you still come out with something. If you aim for the bottom branch and you miss, you come out with nothing.'"

Former cabinet minister Chris Huhne was jailed after his ex-wife took his speeding points
Ms Onasanya's office is not commenting.A Labour Party spokesperson said: "It would not be appropriate to comment on an ongoing case."Perverting the course of justice carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and/or a fine.
In 2013, former Liberal Democrat MP Chris Huhne and his ex-wife Vicky Pryce were both jailed for eight months for perverting the course of justice. It followed an arrangement whereby Ms Pryce took speeding points for the ex-cabinet minister. They both served two months of their sentence. If an MP is sentenced to a prison term a recall petition can be triggered which, if signed by 10% of voters in their constituency, would declare their seat vacant and lead to a by-election.The former MP would be allowed to stand in the by-election.Ms Onasanya, a Christian, has previously compared herself to Esther in the Bible during an interview with Premier radio. She said: "Scripture says to go into all the world - the world isn't just a geographic world - its spheres of influence."So I'm going into the world of politics."
