There was a plan to kill Viktor Yanukovych, the former Ukrainian president, who was ousted from his own country and fled to Russia - after the Revolution of Dignity in Ukraine toppled his regime in February 2014. Serhiy Bernatsky, Yanukovych's former bodyguard and the witness for the defense said this during the interrogation in Obolon district court in Kyiv on June 22.
According to Bernatsky, the murder was planned by a group of unknown perpetrators who expected Yanukovych to come to Kharkiv on February 22, 2014, where the ousted leader intended to join the so-called 'gathering of Ukrainian MPs'. Bernatsky's the-then boss Volodymyr Pavlenko told him that they intended to kill Yanukovych during the gathering.

The attackers planned to use guns and Molotov cocktails. 'The most vulnerable moment in the entire operation was when he would get in the car', Bernatsky said.
When Yanukovych's guards learned about the plan to assassinate him, the ex-president cancelled his visit to Kharkiv and recordered a video address to his compatriots.
Obolon District Court of Kyiv intends to finish the consideration of the case of former president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych suspected in the state treason until August 1.
"The court will determine the final data of the debates on July 30 or July 31, 2018. The stand-by date is August 1," the court's press secretary said.
Yanukovych is charged with state treason, assistance in deliberate actions against Ukraine’s state border, sovereignty and territorial integrity and assistance in leading the aggressive war against Ukraine.
