Ukraine recycles only three percent of solid domestic waste, - Environment Minister

Currently, only three percent of the entire volume of solid domestic waste is recycled in Ukraine. The rest is taken to legal or illegal repository sites and dumped there, - such is the conclusion of the interview by Ostap Semerak, Ukraine's environment minister who spoke to 112 Ukraine TV channel.
'According to our national strategy for waste management, which was developed and approved last November... by 2030, we plan to create the new system, which is to include 300 regional centers for collection and recycling of solid waste', he said.
The minister said he asked all regional state administrations to provide him with the comprehensive information about the active repository sites, their coordinates and morphology; in 2016, the administrations in Odesa and Kherson regions failed to send the information in time. 'The local authorities are responsible for what is going on in their respective areas', he insisted.

Earlier, the minister said that the mentioned strategy foresees three major principles:
Switching to the closed-loop economy, which is the basis of the stable development strategy;
To expand degree of producer’s responsibility, which pushes the business to minimization of waste generation and promotes interest in its recycling;
Implementing a five-degree hierarchy of waste management (where the priority is a prevention of waste generation processes, and the least favorable option is the waste burial).
‘The amount of waste in this country is growing, so is the total area of waste deposits. Most of the damage taken by the environment comes from chemical and metallurgic industries, coal production, agricultural industry and the infrastructure. Currently, there are some 36 billion tons of waste in Ukraine, which means over 50,000 tons per a square kilometer. Only four percent of domestic waste is recycled,’ Semerak said.

According to the minister, by 2030, Ukraine will be able to fully switch to separate waste collection – at least in 5,000 inhabited localities all over the country. ‘By that time, it is quite possible to create 800 facilities for recycling of the processed raw materials. ‘This way, we’ll be able to increase the amount of recycled waste by 20 percent,’ Semerak concluded.
