Since February 2014, some residents of Crimea suffered tortures from the hands of Russian special services. Dozens of such cases were reported since then. Krym.SOS, the organization of human rights watchers reported this as quoted by Radio Liberty.
Since the mentioned date, there were at least 181 cases of inhumane treatment with the peninsula's residents; at least 55 of them were cases of torture, said Tamila Tasheva, coordinator of Krym.SOS, the human rights protection group.
One of those who suffered, Ibrahimjon Mirpochayev noted that in August 2017, Russian FSB agents searched his house, detained and tortured him. He said they bound him with scotch tape, put a bag on his head, punched him and electrocuted him. Mirpochayev added his family members also sustained tortures; he also said that the Russian special services tried to recruit him.
Lawyer Emil Kurbedinov explained that this is the way the Russian special services collected evidence to charge people with 'extremism' or 'terrorism', also making them cooperate.
The Prosecutor's Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea underlines that about 140 criminal cases were opened against those behind the inhumane treatment and tortures of those living in the temporarily occupied territory.
As is known, the Russian Federation occupied Crimea in February 2014. Dozens of people, mainly Crimean Tatars and Ukrainians, faced detentions, searches and other kinds of persecution.
