U.S. Special Counsel Robert Muller, investigating the interference of Russia into the presidential election in the US in 2016, accused Paul Manafort of the attempts to put pressure on the witnesses of his case as Reuters reported.
'The team of the Special Counsel provided the information that Manafort attempted to connect the witnesses by phone through the facilitator and through the coded program of the messages' exchange', the message said.

One of the witnesses reported to the FBI that Manafort was 'in an effort to influence their testimony and to otherwise conceal evidence'.
Due to this, the prosecutors ask to imprison Manafort before the trial.
Paul Manafort and his business partner Richard W. Gates were officially indicted on 12 counts including a conspiracy against the United States of America, conspiracy to launder money, violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, as well as provision of false statements under the Foreign Agents Registration Act and non-reporting of foreign bank accounts. According to the indictment, he “acted as an agent of overseas representatives on behalf of the government of Ukraine, the Party of Regions and Viktor Yanukovych”.

Both Manafort and Gates were placed under house arrest in October 2017, and consequently released in January 2018.
