Syria
has recognized the independence of the unrecognized republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and also agreed to establish diplomatic relations. Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this in a statement.
“In recognition of the mutual support of the terrorist aggression against Syria, the Syrian Arab Republic, the Republic of Abkhazia and South Ossetia agreed on the exchange of recognition and establishment of relations between the Syrian Arab Republic and the Republic of Abkhazia and the Republic of South Ossetia,” the statement reads.
At the same time, Foreign Ministry of South Ossetia published the full text of communique on mutual recognition on its website.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Ossetia, empowered by its government has the honour to declare that the Republic of South Ossetia and Syrian Arab Republic…announce mutual recognition and establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries at the level of embassies from the day of publication of this Communique,” the statement said.

As it was reported earlier, South Ossetia self-proclaimed its independence on May 29, 1992 in the course of the military aggression with Georgia. Abkhazia has self-proclaimed its independence after the war with Georgia in 1992-1993.
Also, President of Russia Vladimir Putin signed the law ratifying the agreement between Russia and unrecognized South Ossetia as to the order of certain departments of the unrecognized South Ossetian army integrating into Russian Armed Forces. The agreement was signed on March 31, 2017. It envisages that when signing a contract for serving in the Russian army, a citizen must be discharged from service in the so-called “armed forces of South Ossetia”.
