Constitutional Court decides on Kolesnychenko-Kivalov language law

At its hearing on 28 February, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine produced a ruling in regards to whether the law “On the principles of the state language policy” #5029-VI (the so-called “Kolesnychenko-Kivalov” law). The court’s press service has informed about this, however, without mentioning what the ruling was, 112.ua reports.

“On 28 February, at the plenary session of the Grand chamber of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, a ruling #2-r/2018 was made based on the claim made by 57 members of Parliament of Ukraine regarding the constitutionality of the Law of Ukraine “On the basics of the state language policy”, - the message reads.

At the same time, according to the Facebook post published by the leader of VO Svoboda Oleh Tyahnybok was ruled unconstitutional.
Nevertheless, Ukrainska Pravda has informed that the court’s press service told no final ruling has been made yet – the text is being proofread and its final version is expected to be published in the nearest future.

The Law "On the Principles of language policy", submitted to the Verkhovna Rada by MPs Vadym Kolesnichenko and Sergey Kivalov. According to the law, the language of the Verkhovna Rada and acts of public authorities, is Ukrainian. When it comes to the language of elections, referendums, science, and education - the focus is on the human right to freely use any language.
