European Commissioner accuses Russian authorities of spreading disinformation

European Commissioner for Security Julian King blames Russia for the purposeful dissemination of disinformation. This is reported by Deutsche Welle.

"There is hardly any doubt that today we are dealing with a cunning, skilfully managed, pro-Russian campaign of disinformation, supported by the government," he wrote in his article. According to the European Commissioner, Europe should actively oppose disinformation.

As examples of major cyberthreats, he cited hacker attacks, the spread of computer viruses, the online propaganda of terrorism, and attempts to manipulate public opinion with fake news. The latter aims to turn "our open democratic system into a weapon aimed against ourselves," King believes.

The European Commission has developed a number of projects aimed both at improving the competence of the users themselves and on combating online propaganda of hatred and terrorism, the European Commissioner assured. Now, work is being carried out jointly with the EU member states to implement this package of measures, King added.

Earlier, Russian hackers were accused, in particular, of trying to influence the course and outcome of the presidential elections in France.

In addition, British Prime Minister Teresa May said that Russia is spreading fake news to "sow discord in the West." And although London does not want an "eternal confrontation" with Russia, Britain will defend its interests.
