Israel asks Ukraine to transfer remains of Rabbi Nachman

The] appealed to the government of Ukraine with a request to transfer the remains of Rabbi Nachman, the founder of the Breslov Hasidic movement from Uman, Ukraine to Israel. The Galei Tzahal Radio claimed this on November 6 as Israel News reported.
It is noted that the Ukrainian authorities did not give the official response, however, the sources from the Ukrainian government made clear that they do not intend to meet a request of the Israeli Foreign Ministry. According to the radio station, the Ukrainian authorities explain this with the fact that the grave of Rabbi Nachman is the object of the historical and national heritage of Ukraine.

The issue of the transfer of the Rabbi Nachman’s grave is raised not for the first time. The office of Ehud Olmert, former Prime Minister of Israel held the negotiations on the transfer of the grave to the 60th anniversary of Israel’s independence. However, they did not succeed to agree.

Rabbi Nachman of Breslov is the founder of the Breslov Hasidic movement. He died and was buried in Uman, Ukraine in 1810. Leonid Kravchuk, former president of Ukraine proclaimed the grave of Rabbi Nachman official historical and cultural center of the Breslov Hasids. About 150 000 pilgrims came to his grave every year at Rosh Hashanah.
