Odesa region ex-governor Saakashvili stripped of Ukrainian citizenship

Odesa region ex-governor Saakashvili stripped of Ukrainian citizenshipPresident Petro Poroshenko has issued a decree depriving Georgia's ex-president and a former governor of Odesa Regional Administration, Mikheil Saakashvili, of Ukrainian citizenship, the State Migration Service of Ukraine said.

This is reported by Interfax-Ukraine.

"The President of Ukraine issued a decree on the loss of Ukrainian citizenship (...) The Saakashvili materials were provided by the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine, processed by the State Migration Service of Ukraine, sent for consideration to the citizenship commission under the President of Ukraine, and duly considered at a commission meeting. Under the Constitution, the President makes a decision on the loss of Ukrainian citizenship based on conclusions of the citizenship commission," the statement says.

Earlier, the Prosecuting Attorney’s Council of Georgia provided Ukraine with facts, that weren’t known when Mikheil Saakashvili obtained Ukrainian citizenship, as Anton Herashchenko, Ukrainian MP and External Advisor to the Minister of Internal Affairs, informs on his Facebook page.

“Recently the Prosecuting Attorney’s Council of Georgia forwarded to Ukraine facts, that weren’t known when the decision was made to grant Mikheil Saakashvili Ukrainian citizenship, and Saakashvili had purposefully hidden them,” he wrote.

Mikheil Saakashvili became a citizen of Ukraine in 2015 by the President's decree. The same day he was appointed to the position of the Chairman of Odesa Region State Administration. He served as the chairman until November 7, 2016.

According to his Facebook, Saakashvili is in the US at the moment.
