St.George’s ribbon ban to remain in Ukraine

St.George’s ribbon ban to remain in UkraineVerkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian parliament, denied the document offered by a group of MPs on Thursday, May 25.

This is reported by 112 UA TV Channel.

The lawmakers proposed to cancel the fine for wearing and public distribution of the St.George’s ribbon. 19 MPs voted for the bill; however, under the Constitution of Ukraine, no document can be approved by the Ukrainian Parliament unless there are 226 pro’s.

Now, Andriy Parubiy, the speaker of the Parliament can sign the bill about fines for wearing the items featuring St.George’s ribbon.

Previously, President Poroshenko signed the respective bill and sent it to the Parliament.

In Russia, the ribbon of Saint George is also used by civilians as a patriotic symbol and as a symbol of public support to the Russian government, particularly since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and started the military aggression in Donbas. In Ukraine and the Baltic states, the symbol has become widely associated with Russian nationalist and separatist sentiment.
