Cambridge resolution requests President Trump impeachment investigation

Cambridge resolution requests President Trump impeachment investigationThe Massachusetts city of Cambridge has passed a resolution calling for an impeachment investigation into President Donald Trump, The Associated Press reported on Tuesday.

The Cambridge City Council passed the resolution Monday evening by a 7-1 vote. One council member abstained from voting.

The resolution calls on the U.S. House of Representatives to review whether Trump's many business interests violate the foreign emoluments clause or the domestic emoluments clause of the U.S. Constitution. The clauses prohibit the president from profiting from foreign governments, the federal governor or state governments, other than his salary.

The proposed resolution calls upon the House Judiciary Committee to investigate whether or not sufficient grounds exist for Trump’s impeachment, arguing that the president’s involvement in the Trump Organization violates the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution. It states that Trump’s business entanglements “undermine the integrity of the Presidency, corruptly advance the personal wealth of the President, and violate the public trust.”

Cambridge voted for Democrat Hillary Clinton in the presidential election.

The city is across the Charles River from Boston and is home to Harvard University.

Passage of the resolution makes Cambridge one of a handful of cities nationwide, including Richmond, Va., and Berkeley, Calif., that is asking the federal government to look into impeaching Trump.
