Ukraine bans Russian Eurovision participant from entering the country

Ukraine bans Russian Eurovision participant from entering the countryUkraine has barred Russia's Eurovision contestant from entering the country because of her "illegal" visit to Crimea, annexed by Moscow in 2014.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has decided to impose a three-year entry ban on Russian singer Yulia Samoilova, who has been selected to participate in the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest, SBU spokesperson Olena Hitlianska told Interfax.

According to Ukrainian law entering Crimea via Russia is illegal, and the 27-year-old singer confirmed she did sang in Crimea in 2015.

The SBU has blacklisted at least 140 other Russian artists.

Russia and Ukraine have been at loggerheads since the annexation of Crimea and subsequent fighting in east Ukraine, which Moscow is accused of stoking.

Ukraine is due to host the Eurovision Song Contest in its capital Kiev in May.
