France's Fillon placed under formal investigation

France's Fillon placed under formal investigationFrench presidential candidate Francois Fillon was put under formal investigation on Tuesday morning, Le Canard Enchaine weekly reported.

He is alleged of diversion of public funds and misappropriation of funds. The weekly gave no further details.

The conservative is suspected of having paid hundreds of thousands of euros in taxpayers' money to his British wife Penelope for work she may not have carried out.

Two of the couple's children, Marie and Charles, have also been interviewed by investigators over claims they held "fake jobs".

The national financial prosecutor's office said investigating judges filed the charges Tuesday. Fillon is accused of misusing public funds, receiving money from the misuse of public funds, complicity in misusing public funds and improper declaration of his assets, among other charges.

Fillon had initially been expected to see the judges on Wednesday and not Tuesday.

He denies wrongdoing but had earlier said he would quit the presidential race if placed under investigation.

Until recently, he was the favourite to win the elections in April and May.
