Nigeria's president returns after weeks on medical leave

Nigeria's president returns after weeks on medical leaveNigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived back to Nigeria on Friday morning, 51 days after he left the country for a medical vacation.

The news of his return Friday was broken last night in a statement by his media aide, Femi Adesina.

A statement said Buhari's "holiday" had been extended on doctors' recommendations for further testing and rest. It gave no details about the health of the president.

The statement also said Buhari expressed appreciation for Nigerians who have "prayed fervently" for him during his absence.

The president is expected to address the nation later on Friday after his long absence, in order to quell any concerns over his capacity to govern.

Buhari left the country for London on January 19, 2017, for a vacation, during which he received medical treatment for an undisclosed ailment for over 50 days.

The vacation was supposed to last for 10 days but was extended indefinitely when the president sent a letter to the National Assembly asking for more time to attend to medical issues as suggested by his doctors.

The uncertainty about the president's health had fueled rumours of his death in some media. The long absence also raised questions about his health and some calls for his replacement.
