French prosecutor to continue Fillon's case

French prosecutor to continue Fillon's caseFrance’s financial prosecutor is said to proceed with the probe of presidential candidate Francois Fillon’s employment of his wife as a parliamentary assistant on the base of evidence gathered by police during their preliminary investigation, according to the statement, released on Thursday.

Eliane Houlette said her office received on February 15 the first elements gathered by police officials in their probe into suspected embezzlement.

“It is my duty to say that the numerous elements already gathered don’t allow us to consider, at this stage, dropping the case,” Houlette said in a statement, adding “the investigation will continue.”

The investigation was started after weekly newspaper Le Canard Enchaine said Fillon’s wife earned hundreds of thousands of euros as a parliamentary assistant without actually working in that capacity. Fillon has been trying to quell dissent within his own party since the scandal rocked his campaign.

Fillon's presidential campaign got another punch on Wednesday, after Fillon's spokesman, Thierry Solere, was put under investigation for alleged tax evasion.
