Steinmeier proposed for presidential post
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has been proposed to replace Joachim Gauck as president next year.
Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives are set to back centre-left Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier after the latest meeting Sunday between the Christian Democrats (CDU) head and her two partners in the ruling right-left grand coalition on filling the largely ceremonial post.
The three party leaders have met repeatedly for months over whom to nominate as a potential successor to President Joachim Gauck.
The President will be elected on February 12th by parliament and delegates from Germany's 16 federal states.
