Ukraine will not pay so called 'legal damages' to Yanukovych family - Justice Ministry

Ukraine will not pay so called 'legal damages' to Yanukovych family - Justice MinistryThere are no foreign court decisions or rulings by the Court of Justice of the European Union (EU) involving damages claimed by former President Viktor Yanukovych and his family members from Ukraine, Ukraine's Justice Ministry has said.

The Justice Ministry's press service on Friday said that statements made by Yanukovych's lawyers about damages awarded to the former president from Ukraine "is a manipulation of public opinion."

On March 15, 2016, attorneys for Yanukovych and his sons filed with the EU's Court of Justice seeking remuneration of legal fees based resulting from arguments by Ukraine in Yanukovych's appeal of EU sanctions placed on him. These filings have not been reviewed," the statement said.

Correspondingly, emphasises the ministry, information that the EU Court of Justice has obliged Ukraine to compensate Yanukovych and his family for legal fees in the amount of UAH 6,378,400 pursuant to his appeal of EU sanctions does not comply with reality.

"Moreover, Yanukovych has yet to demonstrate legally that he in fact made payments in connection with statements of Ukraine supporting EU sanctions against him. No payments or amounts are mentioned," the Justice Ministry said, emphasising that statements by Yanukovych's lawyers "are being made exclusively to manipulate public opinion."

On October 13, a former lawyer for disgraced former Ukrainian President Yanukovych Vitaliy Serdiuk told journalists that the EU Court of Justice had ordered Ukraine to pay compensation to Yanukovych's family for legal transgressions.

"I confirm that this affair has been reviewed and the following conclusion made: our English colleagues, an English law firm, dealt with this issue. This is compensation and a dispute over whether representatives of Ukraine committed procedural legal transgressions. As a result, Ukraine lost or will have to pay money. This is why the individuals involved from Ukraine's state service, the ones whose actions resulted in this loss, should be identified. They should be brought to justice," the Justice Ministry said.
