China warns Taiwan about Dalai Lama visit

China warns Taiwan about Dalai Lama visitTibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama should not be allowed to visit Taiwan, China warned on Wednesday.

The warning came after Freddy Lim, who was elected to parliament in January, invited the Dalai Lama when he met him in India last week to the country.

Dalai Lama is treated as a separatist by China and Taiwan's former president, Ma Ying-jeou, refused Dalai Lama’s visits several times. The former head of self-ruled island, which Beijing claims as its own, didn’t want to worsen the relations with the mainland.

Elected in January president, Tsai Ing-wen, has not said whether the government would allow a visit by the Dalai Lama.

But the trip is opposed by China's Taiwan Affairs Office. The spokesman for the institution, Ma Xiaoguang, said Dalai Lama’s visit could have serious impact.

"The intention of some forces in Taiwan to collude with separatists seeking 'Tibet independence' and to create disturbances will have a severe impact on relations across the Taiwan Strait. We firmly oppose any form of visit," Ma said.
