Transnistria is preparing to join Russia

Transnistria is preparing to join RussiaThe leader of the unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (Transnistria) Yevgeny Shevchuk signed a "decree on the outcome of the national referendum of September 17 , 2006 on the recognition of Transnistria's independence and its subsequent unification with Russia," Ukrinform.

The "decree" notes that "bringing the Transnistrian legal system into line with the federal legislation of the Russian Federation has become the main direction of domestic policy of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic."

The authorities of the Republic of Moldova consider the "decree" illegitimate, since it has been signed on the basis of unconstitutional authorities, illegal referendum held on the part of the territory of the Republic of Moldova.

The Moldovan authorities also said that Shevchuk having signed the"decree" could put an adverse affect on the process of negotiations on the Transnistrian settlement.

The Bureau for reintegration of Moldova's government reports: "We regret and are deeply disappointed that the said document undermines the constitutional authorities of Moldova and its international partners involved in the Transnistrian conflict settlement in the framework of the " 5 + 2 " negotiations (Moldova, Transnistria, Ukraine, the OSCE, Russia, the EU and USA).

In Transnistria it is reported that on the basis of the so-called referendum held ten years ago, 97.2% of the citizens of the region who took part in the voting, supported the policy of independence "of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic" and further free Transnistria joining the Russian Federation.
