Nicolas Sarkozy must stand trial for 2012 election spendingPresident Nicolas Sarkozy should stand trial for breaching campaign spending limits while running for presidency in 2012, the French state prosecutor said on Monday.

The statement came after a long investigation over claims Sarkozy's had party falsified accounts in order to hide 18m euros (£15m; $20m) of spending in 2012.

Sarkozy is accused of "knowingly underestimating" elements of his campaign financing, Reuters reported.

In 2012 Sarkozy has lost the race to current President Francois Hollande, but he is hoping to run again in next year's election.

An investigating magistrate will now make a final decision over whether Sarkozy should stand trial.
