Ukraine's President: Ukraine-NATO cooperation can acquire status of enhanced partnership

Ukraine's President: Ukraine-NATO cooperation can acquire status of enhanced partnershipUkrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said that cooperation between Ukraine and NATO can acquire the status of an enhanced partnership.

"It is very symbolic that we have decided today to further extend this special level of partnership between Ukraine and NATO, and this will allow us [to get] the status, which will include an enhanced partnership. This strengthens our cooperation and operational cooperation with NATO," he said.

Poroshenko noted that this decision is a demonstration of NATO's support for Ukraine.

Poroshenko recalled that July 9 marked the 19th anniversary of the signing of the Charter on a Distinctive Partnership between NATO and Ukraine. The Ukraine-NATO commission was also set up 19 years ago.

The Ukrainian president said that during the summit the parties discussed the progress of reforms in Ukraine in particular in defense, the fight against corruption and macroeconomic stability.

In his turn, the NATO secretary general said that despite certain challenges, Ukraine is committed to reforms and the struggle against corruption.

The joint statement of the Ukraine-NATO Commission passed at the Warsaw summit says: "Allies highly value Ukraine's significant contributions to Allied operations and the NATO Response Force and welcome the contribution made by the NATO-Ukraine partnership to providing security and stability in the Euro-Atlantic area and beyond. Based on the decisions taken in Wales (the NATO summit in Wales in September 2014), we will examine the steps necessary to implement Ukraine's interest in the Enhanced Opportunities Program within the Partnership Interoperability Initiative."
