'Thieves in law’ may help Russian special services in Ukraine - head of Ukraine’s national police

'Thieves in law’ may help Russian special services in Ukraine - head of Ukraine’s national policePowerful mafia bosses, so-called ‘thieves in law’, might go into big politics and arrange deals with leading politicians. Such people represent interests of Russian special services in Ukraine. Khatia Dekanoidze, head of Ukraine’s national police, said this in an interview with LB.ua.

When answering a question about Georgian mafia bosses and their potential activity in Ukraine, Dekanoidze said the following: ‘Thieves in law are the criminals who are supposed to destabilize the crime rate in Ukraine. I am absolutely sure that all these thieves in law – be they Georgian, Russian or Ukrainian, - act in the service of the FSB (Russian federal security service).

The head of the National Police added that thieves in law might have a certain impact on Ukrainian politicians. ‘There are powerful mafia bosses who can get involved in the big politics and make deals with political leaders. That’s what we had in Georgia during the reign of Shevardnadze (Eduard Shevardnadze was the president of Georgia in the 1990s)’, Khatia Dekanoidze said, adding that Georgia adopted the law foreseeing criminal responsibility for membership in criminal circles, while Ukraine failed to pass such law.
