Prime Minister of the U.K. Theresa May supported lifting of the sanctions from Russia in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), as Ukraine’s Embassy to the United Kingdom reported on Twitter.
One of the lawmakers asked whether May is concerned about the return of the right for voting at PACE to Russia, considering the fact that the occupation of Crimea continues and citizens of Russia recently faced suspicion of MH17 case.
May has noted that there are disagreements on the return of the membership of Russia to PACE; she reminded that Russia does not pay contributions. However, according to the British prime minister, Russia should stay in the Parliamentary Assembly.

“The reason is that its membership in this organization is one of the few available means of the international society to prosecute Russia for its violation of the human rights,” she stated.
May added that the UK will never recognize the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia.
As it was reported earlier, the State Duma Council confirmed the composition of the majority of delegation for possible participation in the summer session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
Germany is actively trying to lift the sanctions pressure from Russia in the Council of Europe and intends to reach it on the current session of PACE, according to some western diplomats and the representatives of the expert community.

The Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Angela Merkel claimed that Council of Europe should not forget Russian violations, but stands for returning Russian Federation to the Parliamentary Assembly.
