U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused China and Russia of supporting dictatorship in South America. It is
reported]
“The Chinese cash infusion into the regime (Venezuelan - Ed.) helped to accelerate and prolong the crisis in this country,” said Pompeo in his speech at a conference center in Santiago, the capital of Chile.
According to him, the military and economic influence
of China and Russia in the South American region encourages authoritarian leaders and spreads corruption.
“Russia, as everyone knows, also has long-standing ties with authoritarian leaders in Cuba and Nicaragua,” Pompeo stressed.
Pompeo criticised opponents of the United States in view of the fact that the administration of Donald Trump is trying to overthrow President Nicolas Maduro and create a coalition of countries supporting opposition leader Juan Guaydo.
Maduro retained his power with the support of Russia and China, despite the hopes of some officials in the Trump administration that he could be quickly overthrown by economic sanctions and mass opposition protests.
In March 2019, the United States imposed sanctions against the Minerven Venezuelan state gold mining company, which, according to the US Treasury, illegally supports the regime of President Nicolas Maduro.
Later, the United States imposed sanctions on the Central Bank of Venezuela.
