Puigdemont to run for European Parliament membership

Former president of Catalonia Carlos Puigdemont
will be running on the upcoming elections in the European Parliament; it is slated for May 26. 
According to Reuters, he will be offering his candidacy from the political party Junts per Catalunya.
“It is the moment to make another step to internationalize the self-determination right of Catalonia from Europe’s heart to all the world,” Puigdemont tweeted.

The former leader of Catalonia has been residing in Brussels since October 2017, when the Spanish government started prosecuting him for unconstitutional activity.
The referendum on independence was held in Catalonia on October 1, 2017. According to the results, 90.18% voted for independence, the turnout was 43%. The government of Spain did not recognize the de facto declaration of Catalonia independence.

October 27, the Catalan government voted to declare independence from Spain.
At the same time, the Senate of Spain voted to introduce Art. 155 of the Constitution of the country, according to which self-government in Catalonia was suspended. On the same day, the Prime Minister of Spain, Mariano Rajoy, dismissed the Parliament of Catalonia and announced new elections. After a corresponding report in the official newspaper of the Spanish government, Catalonian governance was passed to Madrid.
