Pope Francis announced the decision to open the access to the materials concerning World War II times and pontificate of Pope Pius XII as Voice of America reported.
“Usually, the Vatican opens access in 70 years after the end of the pontificate; however, in case of Pope Pius XII, who headed the Catholic Church in 1939-1958 and during the biggest part of the World War II, Pope Francis decided to open the archives for eight years earlier not waiting for 2028,” the message said.

The Jewish communities were striving for it during dozens of years. Some of the representatives accuse Pope Pius XII of not condemnation of the Holocaust. The archives concerning the 19-years pontificate will be opened for the researchers in a year (from March 2, 2020).
The Vatican defends the pontiff, insisting that he did everything possible by secret diplomacy. Pope Francis shares this position. He thinks that the critic of Pius is “slightly prejudiced and exaggerated” and expresses the confidence that “serious and objective historical investigation will allow estimating rightly”.
Pope Francis added that he made such decision “in a tranquil and confident state of mind” and added that Pope Pius XII ruled the Church “during the darkest and saddest times of 20s century”.

Earlier the Institute of National Remembrance of Poland got about 60,000 pages of the document on the Soviet repressions of the Poles in the 1930s in the result of the cooperation with the Ukrainian archives.
Besides, the Archives Department of Stasi or State Security Service (the secret police of German Democratic Republic times connected with Russian KGB) found the identity card issued on the name of current Russian President Vladimir Putin.
