NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on the NATO countries, and in particular Germany, not to abandon the programs on the deployment of US nuclear weapons in Europe. He stated this to the Berliner Morgenpost.
"This nuclear participation is important for NATO. And I urge as many Alliance partners as possible to participate in this nuclear integration, including Germany," said Stoltenberg.
At present, there are about 20 B-61 nuclear bombs in Germany, each of which is three to four times as powerful as the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. They are located at the Air Force Base in Buchel, in Rheinland-Pfalz land. The exact number of nuclear weapons is unknown, and even the fact of the deployment of the nuclear bombs on the territory of the bases has not been officially confirmed.
American nuclear weapons, in addition to German ones, are stored at the bases in the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, and Turkey, the newspaper said.
“NATO’s goal is a world without nuclear weapons. But the world will not become safer if we give up nuclear weapons, while Russia, China, and others maintain or even increase their nuclear arsenals,” Stoltenberg stressed.
We remind you that earlier the United States announced the launch of the low-power W76-2 small nuclear warheads production to equip intercontinental ballistic missiles on strategic nuclear submarines.
