U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Qatar Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abderrahman Al-Thani signed a memorandum of understanding, which provides for the expansion of the U.S. El-Udeid airbase in Qatar, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
"We signed a memorandum of understanding with Qatar on the expansion of the American military base El Udeid, which has thousands of American troops stationed. This base is very important for us, and we are grateful to Qatar for hosting our contingent in this country," Pompeo told the press on Sunday, January 13th.
The U.S. Secretary of State previously stated that the base is currently receiving 13 thousand US troops.
Mike Pompeo also noted that Washington is counting on forming an alliance of the six Gulf states, as well as Jordan and Egypt.
“We’re all more powerful when we’re working together,” Pompeo stated at a news conference. “Disputes between countries that have a shared objective are never helpful,” he added.
By the way, on January 8, Pompeo went on a trip to the Middle East, which covers Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Kuwait.
The media previously noted that the purpose of Pompeo's trip was to increase Iran’s opposition in the region, as well as to allay the concern of the Allies on the decision announced by Washington about the withdrawal of the American contingent from Syria.
