Kurbedinov was detained on the way from home to the office. He was able to report about the detention only from the Department of Interior Ministry. Edem Smedlyaev went to him to provide legal support.

On January 2017, Emil Kurbedinov and his fellow Edem Semedlyayev came to support the Saliyev family, the Crimean Tatar activists, whose house was searched by the Russian federal security service. Kurbedinov was detained by the road traffic police before he reached their house.
He was accused of posting photo and video of a rally of Khizb Ut-Takhrir organization in 2013. He was detained for 10 days. On February 5, Kurbedinov was released.
Since Russian annexation of Crimea, Kurbedinov has been actively involved in the defense of Crimean Tatars. He notably spoke out about the exiled Mejlis of the Tatar people leader Mustafa Dzhemilev, and supports civil society activists, journalists, and Crimean Muslims suspected of membership in Hizb ut-Tahrir. More recently, Kurbedinov became a lawyer for one of the Ukrainian sailors arrested during the conflict in the Kerch Strait.
