Green Party: Replace GDP with leisure index

By Bethan Staton, news reporter
The Green Party has called for a free time index to replace GDP as a measure of how well the nation is doing.
The proposed economic indicator will be based on a count of how many hours people spend not working or commuting.
Party co-leader Jonathan Bartley is expected to tell delegates the index will measure time to "have a family life, relax, and pursue the things they care about".GDP stands for gross domestic product - "the value, profits and consumption of every item, profit or service brought to the market by workers, companies, or other economic resources", according to the Office for National Statistics. An economic measure, it is widely understood as an indicator of how things are going in countries more generally.
Green Party: Replace GDP with leisure index

Sian Berry and Johnathan Bartley will back the measure
But the Greens will argue that the new measure will better reflect our quality of life. They aren't the only ones to have proposed a different measurement of national success.Another alternative suggestion is GPI - a Genuine Progress Indicator.
