Engineers from the University of California have designed a microscopic robot (nanobot) which simulates the movement of fish, reports New Scientist. The device can be used as delivery vehicles of drugs, running it in the blood vessels of people. Description of the development published in the journal Small.
Nanobots consists of four segments connected by hinges of silver. The length of each segment reaches to about 800 nanometers. The body of "fish" is formed by two blocks of Nickel, and the head and tail particles of gold. When applying an external magnetic field of the Nickel segments begin to move from side to side, pushing the robot forward. The speed and direction of movement can be adjusted by changing the strength and orientation of the field.
