'Directing will be a place that I die' - Idris Elba

By Claire Gregory, entertainment reporter
Idris Elba has told Sky News that he loves acting but directing is where he believes his career will end up.
The British actor, best known for TV roles in The Wire and Luther, and for starring in Hollywood films including Prometheus, Pacific Rim and Thor, has stepped behind the camera to make his directorial debut with Yardie. The 45-year-old already has another project - a modern retelling of the Hunchback of Notre Dame - in the works and said he expects there to be more to come."I love acting, but at some point when I can't get out of bed to run around, directing will be a place that I die," Elba told Sky News."It's a beautiful way to tell stories, it's also a great opportunity for other actors to have a shot, and nurture a lot of new talent."In this film [Yardie] I had probably four or five actors who had never done a feature film before, or even acted before."

Yardie, based on the 1992 novel of the same name, tells the story of a young Jamaican man who gets on the wrong side of a London gangster when he comes to live in the city.Elba says he had been thinking about directing for a while before deciding this was the project for him."I've had a long, active career as an actor, very blessed by that," Elba said."I've seen a lot of great directors work - I've had the privilege of working with Ridley Scott, Guillermo Del Toro, and I've always said 'I want to do that one day', I really have, and I've always thought I want to jump in to the seat when I feel really ready for it."It was making one movie in particular that really made up Elba's mind.

Elba said he loves acting but directing is his future
He said: "I made this film called Beasts of No Nation, probably about four or five years ago, and I worked with Cary Fukunaga who is an incredible, incredible director, a visionary, and it was watching him work.
"He's a great director, he's a cameraman, he just put his whole vision in to this film, and made one of my favourite films that I'm in."So, long story short, it was from that point that I said 'I need to do it' and then subsequently Yardie, the original script came on to my desk and I was like 'no way', so that was it at that point."Despite his experience as an actor, Elba admits there were elements of directing that surprised him.He said: "Definitely [my] understanding of budget and scheduling."Actors have no clue - we show up, we drink our coffee, say our lines and go home!

"Directors have to understand how much a shot's going to cost, because if you want something really spectacular that's great, but it's going to cost you x amount of time to shoot it, x amount of money to shoot that, and I had no idea of that before."But Elba also says he is comfortable being the one that makes those decisions - and thinks his acting experience has been helpful as it means he has an understanding of how things work on set."I definitely am if the vision is really my own, if it's something I'm really, really passionate about then yeah, absolutely," he added."I say 'ok, cool, I think we'll do one more thank you very much' and I'll lose what I don't want over there because I really want this."
