Cannes to launch international TV festivalCannes is planning a TV version of its acclaimed festival.

Cannes is planning to establish an international festival exclusively dedicated to TV drama in 2018.

Mayor David Lisnard confirmed plans for the twin festival, which he says will be "as prestigious" as its film counterpart.

The Cannes International TV Festival will complement the MipCom and MipTV events, which take place in April and October.

Lisnard said the event had been planned for several years and will launch in 2018 regardless of government support.

The new event will include a competition section and an industry sidebar exactly as the original Cannes Film Festival.

Lisnard also hopes to have roughly 30 teams pitching to potential funders, an online competition and public screenings.
